Climate resilience

Communities in Eastern Sri Lanka face growing pressure from coastal erosion, unpredictable rainfall, and increasingly severe storms. Peoples Hands Organization builds climate resilience through practical, community-based work in coastal protection, climate-smart agriculture, and disaster preparedness.

Pillar one

Coastal Protection & Mangrove Restoration

Target: 5,000 Saplings in Kuchchaveli

Mangroves are a natural buffer against storm surge and coastal erosion, while also restoring habitat for local marine life. Alongside our partner Conservation Nation Network, PHO is restoring mangroves along the Trincomalee coastline, with a target of 5,000 saplings planted in Kuchchaveli.

Pillar two

Climate-Smart Agriculture

Helping farming households adapt

Shifting rainfall patterns and rising temperatures put pressure on traditional farming methods. Where resources and partnerships allow, our climate-smart agriculture work may include:

  • Drought-resilient crop varieties
  • Water-efficient irrigation methods
  • Soil health and conservation practices
  • Farmer training and awareness

To be confirmed specific active climate-smart agriculture projects and verified beneficiary numbers will be published here once available.

Pillar three

Disaster Preparedness

Building on real emergency response experience

Climate resilience isn't only about prevention — it's also about being ready to respond when disaster strikes. PHO's ongoing Cyclone Ditwah response, including the Livelihood Restoration Project and Ramadan Food Pack Distribution Programme, directly informs how we prepare communities for future climate-related emergencies.

Support climate resilience

Organizations working in climate, environment, or disaster resilience are welcome to explore a Green/ESG partnership with PHO — funding, technical expertise, or in-kind support for coastal, agricultural, or disaster-preparedness work.
